The topic of what to do with spent nuclear fuel is ripe for debate. Commercial utilities, the Department of Energy, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission all have important legal and moral obligations to responsibly manage the waste that's been produced in the past six decades.

Several proposals for dealing with spent nuclear fuel have been pursued since the dawn of the nuclear age. ANA's perspectives on some of the more relevant proposals can be found below.


 

Marylia Kelley is Executive Director of Tri-Valley CAREs, Livermore, California. Her work for 25 years with the group has centered on U.S. nuclear weapons policies, programs and environmental impacts, with a special focus on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She has testified before numerous deliberative and advisory bodies, including the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Congress. She is principal writer and editor of Citizen's Watch, and has written on nuclear weapons and bio-defense topics for a variety of political and technical publications, including the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. During her tenure at Tri-Valley CAREs, she has been involved in two dozen successful lawsuits under the National Environmental Policy Act, the California Environmental Quality Act, the Federal Advisory Committee Act and the Freedom of Information Act.
