SUSAN GORDON has been the Director of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability (ANA) for sixteen years. ANA
is a national network of more than thirty groups working to address issues of
nuclear weapons production and waste cleanup. The ANA member
groups live downwind and downstream from the Department of Energy’s (DOE)
nuclear weapons complex sites and know first hand the environmental and health
consequences of the nuclear weapons legacy. She has helped ANA create
cross-cutting, broad-based national campaigns for grassroots activists on
nuclear issues. By working collaboratively,
ANA groups have forced changes in U.S.
nuclear weapons programs, stopping some new weapons projects and securing
cleanup of radioactive contamination.
Susan has been organizing on a wide range of issues for more
than 30 years, with a specific focus on nuclear issues. While living in Oregon, she played a key role
in national strategizing and passing of the nuclear test moratorium in 1992,
working closely with Senator Mark Hatfield and Congressman Mike Kopetski.
Susan has traveled to Russia three times working with
environmental activists striving to raise concerns about radioactive
contamination across Russia. She is a
founding member of the Global Nuclear Legacy Project bringing together U.S.,
Russian and European activists focused on the global environmental contamination
from the nuclear industry and nuclear weapons production.
Susan has testified at many DOE Environmental Impact
Statement hearings including:
Complex Transformation; Greater Than Class C Waste; Los
Alamos National Laboratory’s Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Nuclear
Facility; Mercury Disposition at Waste Control Specialists in Texas; Surplus
Plutonium at Savannah River Site; Modern Pit Facility; Global Energy Nuclear
Partnership; and others.
She was recently invited to present to President Obama’s Blue
Ribbon Commission on Nuclear Waste.
