cONGRESSIONAL MAP
California
Senate
Dianne Feinstein
Committee Assignments
Feinstein assumed office in 1992. She was the Mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988. Feinstein currently sits on the following committees: Judiciary (ranking member), Intelligence, Appropriations, and Rules and Administration. She is currently the Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water, which deals with nuclear issues.
Views on Nuclear Weapons
Feinstein has expressed strong criticism for the Trump administration’s decisions to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and the INF treaty. She has called on the Trump administration to renew dialog on the extension of New START. Feinstein has cosponsored S401, the Hold the LYNE act, S200, the Restricting Sole Authority to Use Nuclear Weapons First legislation, and S272, the Establishing a No First Use Policy legislation. She has been an outspoken critic of low yield nuclear weapons, attacking funding for the B83, the LRSO, and the low yield Trident.
Views on Nuclear Waste
Feinstein has repeatedly said that she opposes new nuclear reactors without a legislative fix to the country’s nuclear waste storage problems. She has cosponsored legislation to address nuclear waste, including S1234, the Nuclear Waste Administration Act of 2019. This legislation would create a new administration within the Department of Energy to address nuclear waste. Feinstein’s view is that Yucca requires the support of both Nevada senators. Until then, she has claimed that she will refuse to take action on the matter.
