TMI, 46 YEARS ON
Restart Despite Past Disaster?!
On March 28, 1979, Three Mile Island (TMI) Unit 2 in Pennsylvania had a 50% meltdown (pictured), the worst commercial reactor disaster in U.S. history. Ignoring that cautionary tale, Constellation schemes to restart Unit 1, closed for good in 2019, supposedly to power Microsoft A.I. data centers. TMI Alert, founded in 1977, leads the resistance against this despicable idea, which follows the precedent at Palisades, Michigan, to restart closed reactors. TMI, in an Orwellian attempt to shed its radioactive stigma, is changing its name to the (Christopher) Crane Clean Energy Center, after the former Exelon Nuclear CEO. TMI-2, like Chornobyl-4 and Fermi-1, was a break-in phase disaster, boding ill for “Small Modular Reactor” new builds.
